Apr 07, 2025 11:48AM ● By Jen Gennaro
Attention all educators! The Global Geospatial Institute is offering a unique professional development opportunity this summer: Life of Litter GIS Teacher Professional Development—a two-day, grant-funded workshop designed to equip grades 3-12 educators with the tools and training to bring Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into their classrooms. (More information on Life of Litter can be found here.)
Whether you're a teacher, guidance counselor, administrator, or paraprofessional, you are welcome to attend. The workshop takes place Wednesday and Thursday, June 4–5, at the East Baton Rouge Professional Development Center (3000 N Sherwood Forest Dr, Baton Rouge, LA 70184).
What is GIS?
Geographic Information Systems is a cloud-based geospatial platform that enables users to create and share maps, apps, and data services. The platform includes over 200 inquiry-based lesson plans in math, science, social studies, English, coding, and computer science—aligned for students in grades 3 through 12.
This Place-Based Community Grant-supported training, powered by the National Academy of Science, will immerse educators in STEAM project-based learning that goes beyond the classroom to engage students in real-world, community-connected inquiry.
Educators will:
-
Learn to activate students' spatial reasoning and critical thinking skills
-
Receive classroom-ready lesson plans and exercises
-
Gain cross-curricular tools for project-based teaching
Students will:
-
Engage in their own learning process through interactive GIS tools
-
Build geographical and spatial awareness
-
Explore and analyze issues within their local communities
Participants will receive a stipend totaling $445, which includes your registration fee. Attendance for both full days is required (with morning and afternoon sign-ins) to receive the stipend.
Space is limited—reserve your spot today! Once the workshop is full, a waitlist will be created.
By registering, you agree to the Terms and Conditions of the Teacher PD. Please be sure to read the full details before submitting your registration.
