Save a Limb, Save a Life

As temperatures drop, foot care becomes even more essential for those with diabetes. Dr. Kyle Lindow, a specialist in diabetic foot health, emphasizes the need for extra attention to foot care during colder months. Reduced circulation and increased sensitivity to temperature changes can make diabetic feet particularly vulnerable to injuries, dryness, and complications.

Dr. Lindow shares his top recommendations for maintaining healthy feet throughout the season:
  • Keep Feet Warm and Dry: Cold weather can reduce circulation, making feet more susceptible to numbness and injuries. Wear warm, moisture-wicking socks and insulated shoes to help maintain proper circulation and prevent excess moisture that can lead to infections.
  • Moisturize Daily: Cold air can dry out your skin, which increases the risk of cracking and sores. Use a fragrance-free, diabetic-friendly moisturizer daily, avoiding the areas between the toes to prevent fungal infections.

  • Inspect Feet Regularly: Check your feet every day for cuts, blisters, or any unusual signs. Use a mirror to see the soles if needed. Even minor injuries can quickly become serious if unnoticed, so vigilance is key, especially during the winter when dryness is more common.

  • Choose Proper Footwear: Wear shoes that provide adequate insulation and protection without being too tight. Look for diabetic-friendly footwear that offers both warmth and room to avoid pressure points and keep feet safe from the elements.

  • Avoid Direct Heat Sources: While it may be tempting to warm cold feet near a heater, hot water bottle, or heating pad, these can cause burns on sensitive skin. Instead, gently warm your feet with socks and gradual room heating to avoid accidental injury.

Dr. Lindow is a distinguished foot and ankle surgeon with a particular focus on amputation prevention and diabetic limb salvage. His expertise is rooted in specialized surgical training in Dallas. TX, where he trained alongside some of the globe's foremost diabetic limb salvage surgeons during his residency.

Dr. Lindow firmly believes that amputation should not be considered the sole solution. Even when faced with the suggestion of amputation as the only option, he explores and implements innovative and less invasive procedures that may offer viable alternatives for patients.
