SU Ag Research and Extension Center Introduces Drone Program for Youth
Sep 16, 2024 02:00PM ● By Charity M. Schaffer, Ph.D.On September 7, 2024, the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension
Center launched the Precision Agcademy STEAM Drone Demo Daze program, aimed
at engaging youth in drone technology. This initiative was led by a team of certified
small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) pilots, including Dr. Charity Schaffer, Director
of Precision Agcademy and Youth Development Extension Agent; Mr. Robert Easly, Jr.,
Director of Advancement; and Mr. Ryan Sugulleh, Associate Director of the
Communities of Color Network.
The event provided an in-depth introduction to drones, focusing on safety, career
opportunities, and meteorological factors for safe flying. Youth participants not only
gained insight into drone operations but also expressed interest in utilizing drones for
entrepreneurship.

Under the guidance of licensed sUAS pilots, attendees received hands-on flight training
and practice. Additionally, beginning in Spring 2025, high school juniors and seniors will
have the opportunity to undergo formal training to become licensed drone pilots through
Precision Agcademy.

The Southern University System Foundation played a key role in organizing and
supporting the event, ensuring this valuable educational experience was accessible to
the local youth.
