Why Cyprus?
The inspiration for our trip was deeply personal. My sister Eloise has lived in Cyprus since 2013, after marrying her college boyfriend, a native Cypriot. I first visited for her wedding in 2014 and was captivated by the island's charm. Eloise has since built a beautiful home there and welcomed a daughter, Stella, who we were eager to meet.
A Warm Welcome
Our trip exceeded expectations, particularly thanks to the people. The locals were incredibly warm, generous, and welcoming, making us feel instantly at ease and like part of their extended family. The food was also unforgettable—if you haven't tried grilled halloumi with pita bread, allow me to introduce you to your favorite new appetizer!
Tips for Future Travelers
One challenge was the long trans-Atlantic flights, especially with two young children. My advice: bring plenty of snacks, maintain a sense of humor, and set low expectations for the journey. Once in Cyprus, embrace the local lifestyle. Slip into flip-flops and bathing suits, take quick dips in the Mediterranean to stay cool, savor espressos after lunch, and never skimp on sunscreen.
Cyprus: A Destination for Everyone
There really is something for everyone in Cyprus. The island's history is fascinating and there are beautiful historical sites to explore. The beaches are truly some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, and because the island is relatively off the beaten path, nothing about it feels touristy. It's also a great place for kids because Cypriot culture centers around family, and yayas and aunties and uncles and cousins are always close by!
