This summer, they're offering free osteoarthritis (OA) screenings for cats. If your whiskered pal qualifies, they might have the chance to participate in a clinical study for a new medication to help manage OA pain. It's the purr-fect opportunity to give your feline friend some extra TLC!

As cats get older, especially over five years, osteoarthritis becomes more common. But detecting OA in our feline friends can be tricky since they're masters at hiding discomfort. Here are some subtle signs that your cat might be dealing with achy joints:

• Avoiding favorite hangouts like the couch or their beloved scratching post
• Taking a raincheck on playtime more often
• Becoming a bit of a hideaway
• Slacking on grooming, especially in the harder-to-reach areas
• Skipping out on those full-body stretches they used to love

"Cats are incredibly stoic when it comes to showing pain," explained Dr. O'Brien of The Animal Center. "A decrease in activity levels or avoiding favorite activities could signal osteoarthritis. We're thrilled to take part in this clinical trial for an innovative OA treatment, as options are currently limited for our feline friends."

If your kitty is selected for the study, they'll receive free exams, lab work, testing, and the study medication. It requires monthly hospital visits for three months and some daily at-home observation by you. As a bonus, dedicated pet parents will receive a credit at the veterinary hospital for their participation.
