May 28, 2024 12:26PM ● By Lauren Pope
Jonathan and Bianca Coats are pretty busy. Both work for ZCSD. Jonathan is the Principal of Northwestern Elementary and Bianca is the Supervisor of Child Nutrition. As the school year wraps up, we sat down to talk with them both about what they've been up to and what initiatives they'd like to support going into the summer.
Q&A with Jonathan and Bianca Coats

Q: Jonathan, can you tell us about your recent involvement with the Great Futures Gala?
Jonathan: Absolutely. I was honored to be selected for the Great Futures Gala, which is hosted by the Boys & Girls Club and BRClubBlue. It's a fantastic event that brings together young professionals dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the Boys & Girls Club. We each committed to raising $3500, and collectively, we managed to bring in over $100K. This money supports less fortunate children, providing them with essential opportunities and support.
Q: What does being an honoree mean for your ongoing involvement with the Boys & Girls Club?
Jonathan: It means a lot. Past honorees have the opportunity to remain involved and connected with the club. The Boys & Girls Club has year-round events, so there's always a chance to volunteer and contribute. I love being a part of something that has such a positive impact on the community.
Q: You’ve had a significant journey in your career. Can you share a bit about that?
Jonathan: Sure. I've just completed my first year as lead principal at Northwestern Elementary School. I've been in the district since 2015 and started as a floating AP who worked at several schools, including NES. Then, from 2016-2022, I was an AP at Copper Mill. Coming back to Northwestern Elementary has been a full circle moment for me. I love my team and the excitement we share for the future.

Q: Bianca, can you tell us about your work with Fork Cancer and the American Cancer Society?
Bianca: Of course. Fork Cancer is an initiative under the American Cancer Society. We organize a gala where various restaurants offer tastings of popular dishes. It’s a wonderful event, and our group of professionals each had to raise $5000. We met our goal and collectively raised over $350K. This money goes towards providing rides to appointments and treatments for Louisiana residents with cancer.
Q: You’re also involved with Hope Lodge in New Orleans. Can you tell us more about that?
Bianca: Hope Lodge is a sanctuary for patients and families to retreat during their treatment. The funds we raise help maintain and improve the facilities. It’s specific to Louisiana residents, and it provides a much-needed respite for those going through challenging times.
Q: Both of you are strong advocates for community wellness. What are some of the initiatives you support?
Jonathan: I support initiatives through the Boys & Girls Club, like their year-round events and volunteer opportunities. It’s all about keeping the community engaged.
Bianca: My mission through my organization is to create all-around health and wellness opportunities for the community, starting with Pilates at Zaks. My monthly news segment and cookbook feature year-round nutrition tips for the whole family.
Q: What message do you have for the community as you move into the summer?
Jonathan: Parents can help minimize learning loss by participating in literary engagement activities such as the EBRPL's summer reading program.
Bianca: Promote wellness by eating healthy and staying hydrated. Try something new this summer, like planting a small garden and trying new recipes.
