Up, Up, and Away: The Story of Zachary's Family-Owned Ballooning Business

Maybe you've seen the colorful hot air balloons that float around Zachary early on weekend mornings and wondered "what's the story with the balloons?"
Well, in the early '90s, a retired helicopter pilot named Philip Brandstuder attended the US Nationals for hot air ballooning in Baton Rouge and immediately fell in love with the sport. This experience propelled him to acquire his balloon license in 1991, and by the following year, he was soaring above Louisiana in his own hot air balloon.
Under the guidance of his father, Philip, Shawn Krause became skilled at piloting balloons. This family tradition grew when Shawn’s daughter, Shawnel Hebert, was introduced to ballooning at just 14 months old. As the years passed, her husband, Chad Hebert, also became involved, and by 2018, their shared passion had evolved into a thriving business.

What started with casual discussions about offering rides through Facebook has blossomed into a fully booked weekend venture, especially during the pandemic. Really Hot Air Balloons, known for its intimate and personalized flight experiences, contrasts sharply with larger companies. They offer private journeys, tailoring each trip to the unique dynamics of guests—from couples seeking a serene escape to larger groups celebrating special occasions who can fly simultaneously in several of the family's balloons.
Flights launch from varying locales based on the day’s winds, adding an element of unpredictability and excitement and typically land in the Americana subdivision. The Hebert family's commitment to bringing the fun of ballooning around the state extends to their participation in local festivals and, of course the organization of their annual Really Hot Air Balloon Fest, which draws balloon enthusiasts from across the region.
"We were so impressed with everything Ashleigh McHugh and Downtown Live Committee did behind the scenes to make the event such a success," said Shawnel "We are so excited to announce that this year we'll be bringing in even more balloons and will have longer hours so more people can enjoy a flight."
Downtown Live is currently distributing sponsorship packets for the event. Interested businesses can contact Ashleigh at 225-654-0287 or email [email protected]

From Philip Brandstuder's initial inspiration to the multi-generational business thriving today, Really Hot Air Balloons symbolizes more than just a family's love for flight, it represents a vibrant part of the local culture, continually reaching new heights.
