Around the State: Get Outta Town and Explore Louisiana's Unique Festivals and Celebrations

Feb 05, 2024 10:19AM ● By Ashley Evans
Mardi Gras is early this year, falling on February 13, 2024. New Orleans might get all the attention and, to be fair, it does host some of the biggest parades from the renowned traditions of Zulu and Rex to quirky events like Krewe of Chewbaccus. If you're looking for something more low-key, though, check out the following parades and celebrations around the state.

1/27/24 Bayou King Cake Festival. Head to Downtown Thibodaux to sample a variety of locally baked King Cakes and vote on the one you believe is the best on the bayou! The celebration also features a children’s parade, live music and more.

1/28/24 Mystic Krewe of Mutts Parade, put on by Baton Rouge’s animal welfare society, invites registrants to walk their dogs in the downtown parade. All proceeds go toward the organization’s spay/neuter program.

2/4/24 Lafayette’s culturally rich Mardi Gras features the Courir de Mardi Gras: a traditional Mardi Gras run (find a pic). This family-friendly, interactive event shares in the medieval tradition of disguised revelers, led by Le Capitaine and singing La Chanson de Mardi Gras, making their way through the historic village begging for the ingredients to make a gumbo.

2/10/24 Spanish Town historic district is the site of Baton Rouge's largest Mardi Gras parade, which is celebrated annually on the Saturday before Mardi Gras. In the weeks leading up to Mardi Gras, Spanish Town’s iconic pink flamingos flock to the LSU lakes.

2/13/24 Pointe Coupee Parish, just across the Audubon Bridge, boasts the third-oldest Mardi Gras Parades. Bring the kids on Fat Tuesday to the “Little Carnival Capital” to catch the two big parades in New Roads.
