Zachary High School hosted a Signing Day event yesterday to honor student athletes who’ve made commitments to play collegiate sports at schools across the country. We caught up with those students as they celebrated and asked them all about their reasons for choosing the school that they signed with and their favorite Zachary High sports moment.

Cheer – Tumbling
Northwestern State University
Major: Computer Engineering
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
They had the best cheerleading program and the best computer engineering program.
What are you looking forward to the most at college?
Cheering at a Division 1 school
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
My favorite memory was cheering at my first football game. I remember it all. We had a big win. The football team was unstoppable that year.
Cameron Stewart
Football – Running Back
Alcorn State University
Major: Broadcasting
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
It had a family environment. It felt like home, even though it’s in the middle of nowhere. Everything they showed me just felt like a great fit.
What are you looking forward to the most at college?
Playing football!
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
Being in the Dome and winning the state championship.
Ambria Langley
Track & Field – Discus, Javelin, Shot Put
Louisiana State University
Major: Kinesiology
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
I’m glad to be close to home so my parents can come to all my meets. Plus, everyone in Louisiana wants to go to LSU, right? I’m excited to be in the best conference for competition.
What are you looking forward to the most at college?
I’m really excited to be with so many friends who are also going to LSU. I also can’t wait to compete in my first LSU meet.
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
Winning state with JJ at the indoor state competition.
Cobe Johnson
Track & Field – Long Jump, Triple Jump
Louisiana Tech University
Major: Finance, hoping to go on for an MBA
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
They made me feel comfortable. The town is Zachary-like. It’s a small town with a good family feel. Plus, my dad is up there.
What are you looking forward to the most at college?
I’m looking forward to meeting new people and bettering myself and growing in all areas
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
My favorite was last year making regionals even though it was my first year competing. Coach really pushed me to achieve my goals and to make it happen.
Jaala Thymes
Track & Field – 100, 200, 4×1, 4×2
University of Louisiana Lafayette
Major: Kinesiology
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
It felt like home and I was really impressed with the track team. I knew I’d be able to grow as a person and as an athlete there.
What are you looking forward to the most at college?
I want to work on dropping my time and seeing what I can do. I hope to set some new personal records and get wider exposure.
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
Regionals of this year. We broke the stadium record for the 4 X 1 and 4 X 2 and set a new school record.
Alexandra Richards

Xavier University of Louisiana
Major: Biology/ Pre-med
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
It had a family-like atmosphere and a great pre-med program.
What are you looking forward to most at college?
I’m really looking forward to the HBCU experience.
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
When the Broncos went to the State Championship my Jr. Year and just every time I get to cheer on the Broncos.
Drew Silman

Covenant College
Major: Undeclared (Possibly, Physics)
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
My dad went there. It has a beautiful campus and I just love the area.
What are you looking forward to most at college?
I’m really looking forward to playing golf and keeping my competitive spirits up.
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
Yesterday’s put on the 18th hole for the State Championship. It felt like it was in slow motion watching it go in!
Dylan Marionneaux

What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
I really like the location and I have lots of family in the area.
What are you looking forward to most at college?
The meat pies!
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
Last year’s walk off during the playoffs.
Brandon Hardy

Major: Sports Medicine
What was the biggest reason why you chose your school?
They really treated me like family and I felt like I’d fit in well with their system.
What are you looking forward to most at college?
Playing basketball!
What’s your favorite ZHS sports memory?
That first Basketball State Championship for sure.
