We’ve Got You Covered: Before and After Emergency Strikes

As third-generation owners of the Ozark Agency, we understand the importance of being prepared for storm season. With our experience in assisting homeowners through emergencies, we want to share valuable insights on how to assess and enhance your insurance coverage to address emergency situations effectively.

Before Emergency Strikes

Assess coverage adequacy

Understand the difference between Actual Cash Value (ACV) and Replacement Cost Value (RCV) policies. ACV considers depreciation, while RCV covers the cost of replacing the roof without accounting for depreciation. It’s also important to assess your deductible for both named storm and non-named coverage. Ensure your deductible aligns with your financial capabilities and risk tolerance.

Prioritize insurance policies

Homeowners insurance provides coverage for property damage and personal belongings, so make sure to assess those values to ensure they’re adequately insured. Flood insurance is a separate policy and is essential in flood-prone regions of Louisiana. It’s a good idea to consider flood insurance even if your home is not located in a flood zone.

Keep policies up-to-date

Review your coverage annually and when major life changes occur. Update your insurance provider about changes in your property, such as building a fence, installing a pool or building an addition, to keep your policy current.

Documentation and record-keeping

Maintain an inventory of your valuable possessions, including receipts and photos, to facilitate the claims process. It is helpful to keep digital copies of important documents.

After An Emergency

Document damage

Take photos and videos of damage before making repairs.

Promptly contact your insurance provider

Initiate the claims process as soon as possible. Pay attention to voicemails left by unfamiliar numbers, as most adjusters are from out of state.

Prevent further damage

Your agent can assist you if a restoration company is needed to extract water, remove wet flooring and sheetrock, tarp the roof, and so on.

Be kind to the adjusters

Insurance agents and adjusters are there to help you during times of chaos, and it’s not their fault the damage occurred. They’re the means to restoration, not just for you, but likely for thousands of others.
