Gardening in Louisiana during the summer can be a challenging endeavor due to the brutal heat. However, with the right tips and techniques, you can create a thriving culinary garden that provides delicious produce for your summer meals. Kathleen Pourciau with This Thyme Gardens shares her wisdom and advice to help you make the most of your limited space and overcome the challenges of the Louisiana summer.

Maximizing Limited Space

Kathleen recommends intensive planting in raised beds and companion planting.
“Pair as many vegetables with flowers that serve the veggies they are next to, mostly by attracting pests to the flowers instead of the crop I want to eat.” One exception to the rule: good airflow around some plants, especially tomato roots, is essential for their health.

Water Management

Raised beds with drip irrigation help conserve water and simplify watering schedules. Mulching retains moisture and suppresses weeds. Watering in the early morning minimizes evaporation and ensures plants receive sufficient hydration.

Native Plants

For biodiversity and sustainability, Kathleen encourages gardeners to consider native plants like Louisiana irises, wildflowers such as Louisiana phlox or bee balm, and native grasses like switchgrass or Gulf muhly. “It’s a way to help the planet and also a way to enjoy plants suited to our climate.”

Thriving Summer Veggies

Despite the harsh conditions, there are several vegetables that thrive in the Louisiana heat. Kathleen highlights the versatility of okra and suggests cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs like rosemary, basil and thyme.
