Fall is our favorite time of year. The season of cooler temperatures, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin patches, and…well, pumpkin everything. To let sweater weather know we’re waiting, we went over to our friend Laura Goodwin’s house in The Plains to do a fall mantle and living room makeover, using décor we sourced locally (Dirt Cheap, I see you!). Here are the design tenets we followed for Laura’s mantle makeover and some additional tips to help you transform your space.
Color
We switched out the green ivy on the mantle for some faux leaves in rich tones like rust, gold, and chestnut brown.
Texture
We increased the visual complexity of the mantle arrangement by adding pumpkins in different textures and sizes.
Warmth
Candles or twinkle lights on the mantle—and a fire in the fireplace if the weather allows—are great ways to add warmth and comfort once the days start getting shorter. Consider pulling down the blinds to create a warmer ambiance.
Layers
We added real pinecones for layers and depth. In the same way, woven baskets, fluffy fur pillows and warm wool blankets throughout the space accompany the year-round pieces in the room in a way that effortlessly elevates the space and brings the fall feels.
When done right, layering subtly changes the look and feel of a space, bringing it together for a cohesive style. When done wrong, the room appears cluttered.
Scent
Candles with fall scents are a great starting point, but bring nature indoors for authentic décor and scent. Pinecones, dried flowers and herbs from the garden add subtle fragrance. Cooking with pumpkins, apples and butternut squash will fill your home with the most festive smells of the season.
