Gaynell Young announced her candidacy for the Zachary Community School Board, District 1. Her official announcement follows:

I am Gaynell Young, wife of Lucius Young, Jr, mother of three, grandmother, sister, student of Zachary schools, and lifelong citizen of the Zachary community.

I have been an integral part of the phenomenal transformation of the Zachary school system as a board member, president, parent, and advocate since 2001.

Over this time, as a new school district, we faced many challenges, but remained steadfast and focused on accomplishing greatness for the people of District 1 and the entire system. As Board President in 2004, we developed our first strategic plan which positioned Zachary as the number one School District in the State for fifteen consecutive years.

I've been TRIED, and experience does matter. Like when constituents call, I eagerly respond and work diligently to help find solutions no matter the issue. Or when new Board Members entrust me as a mentor on policy and governance.

I’ve been TESTED as I fought for constructing the Career Academy to be located in District 1, reviving beloved Port Hudson Elementary for purposeful use after years of stagnation.

I’ve always remained TRUE to the cause of creating a healthy educational experience for all students, educators, and supporting staff of Zachary schools.

Together, we have demonstrated sustained excellence, but I remain invigorated by the prospect of an even greater future for Zachary schools.

On November 8th, I ask for your support to enable me to continue MOVING FORWARD the noble work of elevating Zachary schools to even greater heights.

As the incomparable Nelson Mandela so eloquently said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Let’s continue the educational journey we started together for one final term!

Biographical Sketch

Ms. Young is a graduate of Zachary High School. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Southern University and her Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University. Ms. Young is currently pursuing her Doctoral of Philosophy in Public Policy from Southern University-Baton Rouge. Gaynell Young is a true leader and public servant. In addition to serving on the Zachary Community School Board (past President and Vice-President), she is the Chairwoman for Lane Regional Medical Center Board of Commissioners (serving multiple terms). Ms. Young has numerous other professional and public service affiliations. Including: Foundation Assisting Zachary Education (FAZE) former board member, Port Hudson Improvement Association committee member and former Georgia Pacific Corporation Advisory Committee member. Ms. Young currently serves as the Chair of the Zachary School Board’s Academic/Technology committee. Gaynell Young has been married to Lucius Young, Jr, for forty-three (43) years. They have three children and eight grandchildren. They are active and devoted members of New Life Missionary Baptist Church. Ms. Young believes Outstanding Students, Dedicated Parents, Supportive Community and Effective Leadership are the four (4) pillars for a strong, successful School System.
